Welcome To Pilgrims and Pioneers!

After many years of researching my family geneaology I have been lucky enough to discover actual information about my relatives that lived in the Pilgrim Era and the Pioneer Era- while many people also have realtives from those eras- many do not know their names or where they lived- actually seeing the proof in print makes you much more aware of who they really were.
After discovering these relatives it of course made me curious to learn more about the eras that they lived in and what their lives were like as, the history I learned in grade school had long since been forgotten.
I decided to start this blog for others who are also interested in these eras.
Some of the information here will be actual facts about my realtives and some will be information about the eras in general that I have found on the web.
I hope you will enjoy traveling back in time with me!

Abe Lincoln

I was surfing the web when I ran across this print of Abe Lincoln's funeral procession. I am posting it for it's historical information.
This is the description that accompanied the print:

Print of Lincoln's funeral procession in Chicago, IL
Coverage / Year
1865 to 1870; Middle Victorian, Springfield, IL
Description
"Funeral Service of President Lincoln at Chicago, Illinois. May 1- Removing the Coffin From the Funeral Train to the Catafalque- From a Photograph by Alschuler." Lithograph on newsprint, mounted on white paper. Large crowd lines street, soldiers carry coffin toward large catafalque under canopy. Catafalque under center of three arches with various mottos on them, many flags and flowers. L 15" x W 10 3/4".
Interpretation
One of many images of the funeral processions throughout the country. Lincoln's funeral train took 20 days to get from Washington, DC to Springfield for his funeral and burial on May 4. The train basically reversed the route his inaugural train took in 1861. Along the way, many cities had services and processions so that as many people as possible could see his coffin and pay their respects.

MyAunt Dorothy is 90!

Or will be in a few days! Last Tuesday two of my cousins & her grandaughter went to see her and took her to lunch for her upcoming birthday. I had planned to go but could not so I am planning on going August 4th now. My cousin sent some pics to me & I was so thrilled to get them- my aunt Dorothy was never one for fancy & fluff but her mild manner always made her so special!
I can not wait to go see her!

Lincoln Days at Propheter Park

This Saturday- July 18th- there is going to be a celebration for Abe Lincoln's 200 year birthday. It is put on by the local Historical Society. It will be held at Propheter Park in Sterling as this is where a statue of Abe Lincoln is. It will run from 1-5 pm.
This is the first time for it so I do not know how big it will be but I know there are Lincoln & Mart Todd impersonaters giving presentations and some vendors- I will be vending my wares that afternoon. If you are in the area stop on by and chat!

The Church Building. The church building itself had no significance to the Pilgrims, and was kept intentionally drab and plain, with no religious depictions, crosses, windows, fancy architecture, or icons, to avoid the sin of idolatry. At Plymouth, the Pilgrim's church was the bottom floor of the town's fort--the top floor held six cannons and a watchtower to defend the colony. The church room was also the town's meetinghouse, where court sessions and town meetings took place. Isaac de Rasieres, who visited Plymouth in 1627, reported how the Pilgrim's began their church on Sunday: "They assemble by beat of drum, each with his musket or firelock, in front of the captain's door; they have their cloaks on, and place themselves in order, three abreast, and are led by a sergeant without beat of drum. Behind comes the governor, in a long robe; beside him on the right hand, comes the preacher with his cloak on, and on the left hand, the captain with his side-arms and cloak on, and with a small cane in his hand; and so they march in good order, and each sets his arms down near him." During the early years of Plymouth, failing to bring your gun to church was an offense for which you could be fined 12 pence.

Met Life Blimp Overhead!

My son called me about an hour ago and said "go out into your front yard and look East".

Of course I did and the Met Life Blimp was flying over head. It was low enough that I could see the basket( or what ever it is called) underneath. I am not sure where it was coming from or where it is headed for sure but, I see next week it is going to be at the John Deere Classic next week - that is only about 60 miles away from me.

The Met Life website does have a schedule- you can check the schedule & if it is near you - you may see it too!
