Welcome To Pilgrims and Pioneers!

After many years of researching my family geneaology I have been lucky enough to discover actual information about my relatives that lived in the Pilgrim Era and the Pioneer Era- while many people also have realtives from those eras- many do not know their names or where they lived- actually seeing the proof in print makes you much more aware of who they really were.
After discovering these relatives it of course made me curious to learn more about the eras that they lived in and what their lives were like as, the history I learned in grade school had long since been forgotten.
I decided to start this blog for others who are also interested in these eras.
Some of the information here will be actual facts about my realtives and some will be information about the eras in general that I have found on the web.
I hope you will enjoy traveling back in time with me!

Quaker Antique Blackwork Sampler

This is just a small portion of this sampler but I wanted to show the detail of this sampler.
It is worked in Quaker style and is stitched entirely with black silk thread.
It was stitched in 1809 by Ann Smith.

Make It Monday

I would like to post tutorials but at the present time I do not have a digital camera so I have to be satisfied with finding things that others have posted.
Hopefully you will find something new you want to make. This a cute stitchery sampler from Homeberries.com

Loara Standish Sampler

Loara Standish was the daughter of Pilgrim Miles Standish.

A sampler stitched by her is housed at the Pilgrim Hall Museum. Part of the sampler reads:

Loara Standish is my name Lord guide my heart that I may do thy will Also fill my hands with such convenient skill As may conduce to virtue void of shame and I will give the glory to thy name.

The sampler was stitched on 50 count linen- I can't imagine doing this!

More photos of the sampler may be viewed at http://www.pilgrimhall.org/samplers2.htm

I did accomplish my goal. The sampler is framed, the makedo is assembled, and the pinkeep has been started.
Hopefully I can make the same progress tonight!
When I get the pictures taken they will be posted on http://pilgrimsandpioneersprimitives.blogspot.com

Work for Wednesday

I do have to go to work this morning but... my plans for when I get home is to pour candles, frame the small blackwork sampler I just finished, attach the folkart bird to a candlestick for a makedo, and start a pinkeep. Stay tuned to see if I meet today's goal!

My Snowy View!

A week ago today- this was my view as I looke toward our old barn! It snowed fast & furious like this for about 20 minutes!
Today was much better - near 60 degrees- I even planted some veggie seeds in my garden spot!

The Day for a Pioneer Woman

The pioneer woman's typical day consisted of cooking over a wood stove, pumping water, and carrying it into the house for cooking, bathing, and washing. She also made most of their clothes, scrubbed them clean on a washboard, using soap she had made in an old butchering kettle, dried the clothes in the sun, and ironed them with a heavy iron heated on the stove. She would hang her milk in the well to cool, put straw under the carpet for more wear and more warmth, and filled the straw tick mattresses twice a year with clean straw. She gave birth to her children by lamplight in the drafty house and nursed them all on castor oil and prayer.

Pioneers Emigrate to Canada

My grandmother's half brother Clarence Shere was an adult before my grandmother was born. In the early 1900's he packed up his family & moved from Yorktown, Il to Drinkwater, Saskatchewan, Canada.

I have been lucky enough to find these photos from Canada at the Tampico Historical Society. Apparently my great grandfather Will Shere traveled to Canada for a visit back in 1910! He is one of the men in the barn photo- I haven't been successful in enlarging this photo to see whic one he is yet!
