Laura Ingalls Wilder- A True Pioneer Woman

Recently a very good friend of mine sent me several books wrtitten by Laura Ingalls Wilder ( thank you Holly!)

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them( and I am reading then over again!)

Many of you know Laura as played by Melissa Gilbert in the Little house on the Prairie tv series-( I still watch it by the way!). But the Ingalls family were a real pioneer family that endured many hardships during their life on the prairie- if you get a chance you really should read the books. I thought you might enjoy learning a little bit more about the real Ingalls family. The photos and information were taken from some of the many websites there are about Laura.

Laura was born in Pepin, WI Febraury 7, 1867 and died in Mansfield, MO on February 10, 1957 at the age of 90. Her family moved to Independence, KS which was Indian Territory - after a few years they moved again to Walnut Grove, MN, a few years later to Burr Oak, Ia- back to Walnut Grove, MN and finally to Desmet, South Dakota in 1879. There the family finally stayed.
Laura married Almonzo Wilder in 1885. In 1894 they moved to Mansfield , Mo. They once again experienced many hardships but finally were able to replace the windowless cabin they had moved into with a 10 room farm house. Almonzo died in 1949 at the age of 92.
Their daughter Rose Wilder Lane was also a famous author actually helping her mother start her writing career.

Early Clothing- the Signfigance of Color

In general, clothing was made of wools and linens. Colors were of wide range but took on significance. Black however was a color of responsibility. Children and servants often wore blue. Russet was worn by the countrymen. Other clothing was made from animal skins such as deer, moose, or elk.

Pilgrim men wore felt hats, ruffle collars, large cuffs, many buttons, balloon breeches, garter belts and stockings. Their shoes had buckles and heels.

1600 Women wore heavily embroidered material. Dresses were long with ruffles or large lace collars.

Men took on the pirate look with balloon pants, tights, tie shoes, plume hats. Clothing was stitched by hand. Long coat type jackets were worn with knee highs, pants to just below the knee where there was tie.

A Thyme to Harvest From the Earth

Today I worked at harvesting some vegetables from my garden.

Cucumbers, green beans, cherry tomatoes, yellow tomatoes and various kinds of red tomatoes.

The cucumbers have been made into refridgerator pickles amd the green beans will be dried tonight. Tomorrow I will pick the green beans at my son's house and ry them tomorrow night along with some of the tomatoes.

It will be so nice to enjoy these vegetables in December and January when the wind and snow is blowing.

With all of the preserving I have been doing I feel connected to all of my great grandmother's both Pilgrim and Pioneer's!

My dream is still to visit this plantation and see how my ancestors live- in the mean time I content my self by looking at photos of the plantation.

I would love to live a more simpler life drying vegetables on string on my hearth, or sit in front of my fireplace while doing some needlework. Seeing the ocean when ever I wanted to would be great. For awhille I wouild even love the ambience of the candleight and the glow of lanterns. But could I really live up to all the hardwork Pilgrim woman had to do, or endure being out in the stocks if I committed a minor infraction they meted out stiff punishment for? I think perhaps not but my hat is off to my 10th great grandparents for doing so!

Wild Turkeys Again!

The turkeys have been back again for the past two days and this time I did get pics- not as close as I wanted to though- but these turkeys can move fast! The bigger turkey is a male and the smaller ones females. I am n ot sure what lind of food they think they are going to find in out yard but I do enjoy having them come!! click on the pics to enlarge them.

Little Things Make Me Happy!

I have wanted a food dehydrator for several years now.

Being as frugal as I am I looked at resale shops and never found one.

This year my garden is producing so well that I decided to go ahead and buy a new one.

The price has come down in the past few years and I think I got a good deal- no shipping charges- I ordered it on Tuesday and it came this afternoon by Fed Ex. Here it is on my counter getting it's first use. I am dehydrating, cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, Hubbard Squash, and Zucchini- I will know in the morning how they turn out! I am excited!!

Who Was Mariah Benson?

She was my 6th great grand mother. I think her name is both beautiful and fascinating.
Unfortunately I can not find much information about her.
I know that she married Edward Bumpus on Nov. 24, 1748 and that two sons were born Edward (my 5th great )grandfather and James and that she passed away before 1758. My 6th great grandfather then married a woman by the name of Sussana Dean and they had more children.
I will continue to research Mariah Menson- she is my new challenge!

Wild Turkeys in My Yard!

About on half hour ago I looked out my kitchen windo and saw the head of what appearred to be a wild turkey- I ran out the door and there was a flock of 6-8 of them in my yard. I ran back in to get the camera but I startled them and they went down behind the barn and flew off. I did find this pic on the net so you can see what I saw! Never had them around here before!

First the foxes and now wild turkeys! I hope these turkeys are nit the foxes dinner tonight!

Earth Sweet Earth!

The earth has been so kind to us here in the Midwest! These photos were taken about 3 weeks ago and since that time the plants have gotten much bigger!

So far we have enjoyed several pots of green beans with potatoes, several zuchini and cucumbers, but today was the frosting on the cake! The first ripe tomato! There is nothing better! Hubby and I split it. There should be more in a few days! In fact the plants are so heavy with tomatoes I may buy the food dehydrator I have been wanting or so long!

Who was Hannah Bompasse of Plimoth Plantation?

She was my 10th great grandmother but her parentage is uncertain- back then record keeping was hiy and miss at best. She is many times just listed as Hannah.
Many believe she was Hannah Anable- but there are records( at least some say) that Hannah Anable married some on other than my 10th great Grand fatehr Eduoad Bompasse.
Some believe that she was a Native American woman and that Eduoad chnaged her name to Hannah.
I am not sure this debate will ever be solved because of the record keeping or lack there of. It has been proven that they did have 13 children together and that they died 9 days apart in 1693. Their names are listed on the memorial at Winslow Cemetery in Mrashfiled MA alonf with several more famous Pilgrims.

Rudbekia & Torelina

I bought some new plants today- I had heard of the Rudbekia but not the hanging pot- Torelinia- it looks similar to Violas which I can not grow! I think it is beautiful!
